Mother’s Day Gifts
I suppose that I can be difficult to shop for, or at least that’s what my kids say. I’m not into jewelry, perfume, or any of the other stereotypical gifts that are usually heavily advertised for Mother’s Day. I’m more of a rough and tumble, let’s go play ball outside, kind of mom.
This year my kids hit the nail on the head with their gifts to me. They all chipped in (with some help from their father) and bought me sports team tire covers. They got all of my favorite teams so that I can switch out the covers according to the sports season. Now that’s what I call a thoughtful Mother’s Day Gift!
What Will Happen to Tebow?
Tim Tebow inspired millions of followers with his iconic pose and prayer. It wasn’t enough to keep him in Denver once Manning was up for grabs. Tebow, provided there aren’t any further hold ups, will be playing for the Jets next season.
This led me to wonder, what will happen to the legions of Tebow fans? People all over the country scooped up Tebow fan gear, even though he may not have played on their favorite team. Do you think that these fans will continue to support him and buy Jets fan gear? Just out of curiosity, I’ll be keeping an eye on NFL tire covers sales to see if I notice any spikes on Jets memorabilia.
Jets Coach Mouths Off
New Yorkers are known for their big mouths. For , coach of the New York Jets, his big mouth has cost him $75,000. The NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell levied the fine on the coach in response to Ryan mouthing off to a fan.
As the Jets were walking off the field someone in the stands yelled, “Hey, Rex, Belichick is better than you.” (Bill Belichick is the coach of the New England Patriots, whom the Jets had been playing at the time of the incident). Ryan was caught on film telling the fan to “shut up” and he also used other profanity. I don’t think this incident will tarnish Ryan’s reputation with New Yorkers; if anything, it will make more of them run out to get Jets NFL tire covers!
NFL and NFLPA Donate to 9/11 Charities and Memorials
It’s hard to believe that this coming September will mark ten years since the 9/11 terrorist attack. In honor of the 10th anniversary the National Football League and the NFL Players Association have pledged to donate $1 million to three 9/11 memorials and two charities. Of the $1 million, $500,000 will go to the 9/11 Museum and Memorial in Manhattan, $250,000 will be divided among the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pa. and the Pentagon Memorial Fund in Washington D.C.
The remaining $250,000 will be raised at an and be divided equally between Tuesday’s Children and MyGoodDeed. This is not the first time the NFL has been involved in charitable donations to 9/11 memorials and charities; the New York Giants and the New York Jets have made donations in the past. I’m not sure what will be in the auction, but I’d be willing to place a bid on some NFL tire covers and plenty of other memorabilia, especially since the proceeds are going to worthy causes.

Most recent NFL Super Bowl champions, the Green Bay Packers are an all-American football team based out of Green Bay, Wisconsin. Founded in 1919 by Earl ‘Curly’ Lambeau and George Whitney Calhoun the Green Bay Packers have since won 13 league championships including 9 NFL championships prior to the Super Bowl era and four Super Bowl victories in 1967, 1968, 1997 and 2011.
Other notable statistics of the Green Bay Packers include 13 consecutive non-losing seasons that started in 1992. Some also know this timeframe as the Brett Favre era, which spanned from 1992 to 2007. After replacing the at-the0time injured quarterback for the Packers, Don Majkowski, Brett never missed the start of a game throughout his 2007 stint with the team.

PRO BOWL or SNO-BOWL
There are all-star games in most if not all-pro sports. What do the successful ones have in common? The day before there is competitions in the areas where highlights are born. The MLB has the home-run derby, the NBA has the dunk contest, the NFL who knows what? Think of all the things that the players co
uld compete in. This game is about the cream of the crop, the speedsters on the outside, the strength of the defense, and the accuracy of the quarterback (could you think of some events, duh).
With all these things you would assume that someone could come up with something interesting to watch. So when someone gets into anothers grill, they would truly have bragging rights. We all know the game is more about being named to the team than playing the game. So, take the cover off the tires and show us your wheels. Besides it may fill some of those empty seats. Maybe, it should even be the first game of the new season where all players are available and the fans are hungry for any football. Show me your skills!
Land The Jets
In the first half of the AFC playoff game the New York Jets didn’t even get the landing gear up on there attempt to take off, leaving the wheel covers on. Instead Pittsburgh dropped the steel curtain down and chalked the wheels into place. The Pittsburgh Steelers pretty much had their way with the Jets i
n all aspects of the first half, scoring on offense and defense. Through in a field goal and the half ended with a 24-3 score.
The only score the Jets could manage was on a late field goal, which looked turbulent at best. Then they came out after halftime and drove down for their first touchdown of the game and the only score of the third quarter. Then the fourth quarter began and the Jets continued to hit the afterburners toward the goal line, but were held on four straight plays in a Steelers goal line stance. Pittsburgh continued on their long winters nap, on offense, by fumbling the ball in the end zone and falling on it for a safety (24-12). But the clock was now becoming the enemy and the Jets drove again down the field to have a first and goal at the 7-yard line, this time coming away with a touchdown and an extra point. The Steelers then woke up and sustained a drive to run out the clock and win 24-19.
Who Was That Guy?
Watching the NFC playoffs with the Bears and Packers was more interesting than the score would show. Neither team was great or bad, but the defenses played good. Rather ironic that it was a good game. The Green Bay Packers seemed to have the game under control with a 14-point lead, but then came back the Chicago Bears lead by quarterback Caleb Hanie. Who? That’s right, the third string quarterback turned it into a 7-point game.
The Defen
se followed suit by forcing the Packers to punt. Then Hanie was the focal point again throwning a pick six to turn it back into a 14-point spread. So, who do you think gets the ball in his hands again? That’s right it’s Hanie, bringing the Bears quickly down the field to get the score back within seven. Once again the Packers go three and out and back comes Chicago. Driving down the field making everyone think the game was going to head to overtime. Not to be though, because of an interception with 32 seconds remaining. The tailgaters must have been packing up and removing the tire covers over and over.
Beware of Bears
The Chicago Bears showed very little rust on their way to the NFC Championship game. The Bears dispatched the Seattle Seahawks to advance the next game o
f the play-offs. It was no contest through most of the game and it was obvious when Seattle missed a 35-yard field goal attempt.
It was all the Monsters of the Midway through three quarters and looked like they were going to coast to the finish when the Seahawks settled for a field goal when they were down my 21. But then someone took the wheel covers off and a game began. At least the game was fun for one quarter. Next week should prove to be interesting with the Green Bay Packers. The Black and Blue division will have some one in the Super Bowl. HUH! Who really believed that there shouldn’t be a rule, if you can’t finish 500 then you can’t be in the playoffs?
Looking Ahead to 2011 Top 25
Mark Schlabach of ESPN is already looking ahead to next year’s college football top 25. He has high hopes for the SEC, including the Oklahoma Sooners. Schlabach reasons that the Sooners finished out 2010 with a 12-2 record, won a Big 12 title for the seventh time in 11 seasons, and decisively one a BCS bowl against UConn.
The Sooners may be the team to beat next season with 14 returning players, including quarterback Landry Jones. Ryan Broyles, too, will be returning having passed on entering the NFL draft. The Sooners have to replace their leading rusher and a few members of their defense, but overall should fair well, given that two of their most difficult Big 12 games will be played at home (against Texas A&M and Missouri). Fans should stock up on Oklahoma Sooners tire covers and roll over to Oklahoma State for the Bedlam game and Florida State to lend the boys support during key contests on the road.
