Moneyball

I don’t know why it took me so long, but I finally watched the film “Moneyball” this past weekend. As a film, I thought the movie was fantastic; Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill really brought their characters to life. What was far more interesting was the strategies put forward from Michael Lewis’ book “Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game.”

The sabermetric approach is now used throughout the MLB. The closing credits of the film even mentioned that the system helped my beloved Boston Red Sox win the World Series. Though I can’t claim to understand all the analytics, I did walk away from the film with a new appreciation for the role of GM and a desire to run out and buy some Boston Red Sox MLB tire covers.

Highway 12

While my buddies and I were exploring Highway 1, my brother was celebrating his high school graduation by driving Highway 12. Utah Highway 12, as it’s locally known, is one of 27 nationally designated All-American roads. This is the highest honor a road can receive and is determined based on the beauty of the scenery along the drive.

When we both returned home from our respective trips, my brother showed me pictures of his travels. He stopped by Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, and the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Instead of K-State tire covers, my brother was sporting LSU Tigers tire covers, as he is headed down to LSU in the fall to pursue a degree in architecture.

Florida Falls to Duke

The Lady Seminoles put up a good fight but it was not enough to overcome the Blue Devils. The Florida Seminoles fell to Duke 67-57. To be fair, Duke is ranked fifth in the country and has an impressive basketball heritage.

Said Florida State head coach Sue Semrau, “I couldn’t be prouder of the way we played today. They left everything they had on the floor against the No. 5 team in the country. I’m very proud of them.” There’s always a silver lining: Alexa Deluzio and Natasha Howard played incredibly well throughout, with Deluzio scoring 18 points. My family will continue to drive around town with our Florida State Seminoles tire covers in support of the women’s basketball team.

Highway 1

After college graduation, my buddies and I decided to take a California road trip. We wanted one last hurrah before entering the real world. We decided to follow California’s State Route, better known as Highway 1. It follows the fantastic coast line and goes by many iconic parts of the U.S.

We gave ourselves plenty of time for trip so we could stop into some of the coastal towns like Carmel-by-the-Sea and Laguna Beach. Of course we also made time for the big three: Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco. Other attractions we saw were Hearst Castle and Big Sur where we hiked through redwood forests. Perched on the backs of our cars were Kansas State tire covers – just because we were in CA didn’t mean we weren’t going to represent our alma mater!

It was recently announced that three Florida Gators were selected to the SEC Coaches preseason All-SEC softball team. The three talented players are sophomore IF Cheyenne Coyle, senior CF Michelle Moultrie, and junior C Brittany Schutte. Moultrie and Schutte are returning All-Americans.

Alabama and Tennessee led all schools with four selections, but Florida was picked by the league’s coaches to win the SEC. Florida will open At USF-Fairfield Inn and Suites Tampa North Tournament from February 10-12. I expect to see plenty of Florida Gators tire covers in the parking lot!

Storing Winter Tires

Although there are still a few months left in the winter season, I’m already looking forward to the day I can put away my winter tires. In anticipation of that day, I’ve gone out and bought new collegiate tire covers. These covers will be used to protect my winter tires during the nine months of the year they aren’t on my car.

In addition to covering each tire in its own cover, I also store them in a cool, dry place. (Usually this place turns out to be the basement, although if I finish insulating the shed the tires can be stored in there). Proper storage protocol also dictates that winter tires be stored on their sides and stacked no higher than four tires.

Acceptance!

Not long after I wrote the last post my brother received his acceptance letter from his top choice university. He was nervous at first because the envelope was thin. Traditionally a thin letter means rejection. Fortunately, the opposite was true. The envelope was simply thin because a larger packet will be mailed, pending his agreement to attend the university.

Not surprisingly, my brother was thrilled (still is thrilled). My parents, however, are over the moon. They bought even more university paraphernalia, including college tire covers. I can’t remember them being this enthusiastic when I went off to school, but then again, I didn’t choose their alma mater like my brother.

USC Trojans

The athletic teams representing the University of Southern California are known as the USC Trojans. (Officially, the women’s teams are referred to either as Trojans or Women of Troy). As part of the Pac-12, the Trojans have won 116 national championships, including 94 NCAA national championships.

The Trojans have a fierce rivalry with UCLA in both sports and academics. The rivalry between the two California schools is pre-dated by a rivalry between USC and Notre Dame. USC fans are incredibly loyal and demonstrate their pride by dressing up as Trojans for games, putting USC Trojans tire covers on their cars, and singing along with “Tusk” during the fourth quarter of home football games.

Cleaning Canvas Tire Covers

Canvas is a durable, versatile woven material. It is used in a number of items from shoes to tire covers. Though canvas can withstand a lot of wear and tear, it cannot hold up to a washer and dryer.

Canvas is 100 percent cotton, so it shrinks easily. Instead of tossing a dirty canvas tire cover in the laundry, was it by hand with mild soap, clean water, and a soft brush. Allow the canvas tire cover to air dry so as not to shrink and therefore no longer fit over the tire for which it was intended.

Creative Display of Bumper Stickers

When I was younger, I used to purchase t-shirts from every new and interesting destination I visited. Once it became a struggle to close my dresser drawers, I decided that it was time to find a new collectible. I turned to a cheaper, space-friendly alternative: bumper stickers.

Rather than simply collecting bumper stickers in a binder, I chose to put mine on display. I bought a plain black vinyl tire cover and arranged my bumper stickers on the cover in an artistic manner. I think it jazzes up the rear of my car without clogging the rear windshield as you often see with other bumper sticker collectors.
