Calgary Defeats Minnesota
Over the American Thanksgiving weekend, the Calgary Flames defeated the Minnesota Wild, 5-2. It was a good way to wrap up the four-game road trip; the Flames had lost the three previous games. “People think it’s over after 22 games, and we don’t believe it is. So this definitely is a big boost, to be able to break out goals against this team,” said Jarome Iginla who had third period goals which padded Calgary’s lead.
The Minnesota Wild is one of the best teams in the league, so their defeat is no small triumph. I’m sure that Calgary fans are celebrating by putting NHL tire covers on their four-wheelers. (As a fan of many losing sports teams, I know you have to celebrate wins whenever you can).
Breakthrough for the Carolina Hurricanes
Last weekend the Carolina Hurricanes played their best game of the week. They beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2. In the last 17 matches against the Maple Leafs, the Hurricanes have won 12.
The Hurricanes peppered the Leafs goalie Ben Scrivens with 41 shots. Cam Ward, goalie for the Hurricanes, made 23 saves. I’m not sure how much BBQ goes on in Canada, but down in the Carolinas, I’m sure fans were whipping off their Hurricane NHL grill covers for a celebration meal!
Jets Coach Mouths Off
New Yorkers are known for their big mouths. For , coach of the New York Jets, his big mouth has cost him $75,000. The NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell levied the fine on the coach in response to Ryan mouthing off to a fan.
As the Jets were walking off the field someone in the stands yelled, “Hey, Rex, Belichick is better than you.” (Bill Belichick is the coach of the New England Patriots, whom the Jets had been playing at the time of the incident). Ryan was caught on film telling the fan to “shut up” and he also used other profanity. I don’t think this incident will tarnish Ryan’s reputation with New Yorkers; if anything, it will make more of them run out to get Jets NFL tire covers!
Ugly Uniforms Face Off
Indulge me for one more post about the Maryland Terrapins. Personally, I am not a giant fan of the 527 combinations of uniforms that were unveiled this season (okay maybe the number is a bit of an exaggeration). I thought our uniforms from the past few seasons were classic and fully representative of our state.
I’m still not a big fan of the uniforms, but after seeing what Notre Dame wears, I know it could be worse. Let’s just say that the gold helmets with bright green clovers were way too cheesy. I couldn’t stop thinking about leprechauns and Lucky Charms the entire game! I doubt Notre Dame fans would want those helmet designs on their NCAA tire covers, so why put them on the helmets of their players?
Maryland vs. Notre Dame
This past weekend, the Fighting Irish took on my beloved Maryland Terrapins at FedEx field, the home of the Washington Redskins. I’m not a big football fan, but I always tune into nationally televised games that feature my school. Maryland has not been having a good season. Even the Maryland Pride uniforms couldn’t help them stop Notre Dame from decisively winning the match-up.
Despite the defeat and the injury of our star quarterback, Maryland fans had a good time. is just 15 minutes away from the University of Maryland’s campus, so lots of fans were in attendance. They broke out their Terrapin NCAA grill covers and had fun tailgates before the game – or so it looked from the pictures my friends later posted online.
Basketball Season
We’re at that point in the year where the end of the collegiate football season overlaps with the beginning of the collegiate basketball season. Even with the NBA season delayed, that’s a lot of sports to watch! I do my best to attend as many games in person as I can.
Some of my friends make fun of me for spending all my time at sporting events. I counter that I’d rather be showing off my team pride at the arena then becoming a vegetable at home in front of the television. Plus, how else am I supposed to show off my awesome NCAA college tire covers?
Season’s Greetings!
I was running a few errands at the mall this past weekend and it is fair to state that retailers are ready for the holiday shopping season to commence. Holiday lights, Christmas wreaths, an oversized candy canes are already on display. The decorations started me thinking about the people I have on my shopping list this year.
Both of my boys are away at college. One of the activities they love is tailgating before sporting events. Shopping for them should be fairly easy; I’ll just pick them up some NCAA college grill covers and BBQ tools!
Tony La Russa to Retire
After a spectacular World Series win, St. Louis Cardinals manager, Tony La Russa, has announced his retirement. He made the decision prior to the Cardinals making the play-off, and he ends his career as the third on the all-time wins list. During his illustrious career, he has won three championships, present win included.
It is unusual for a for a manager to step down after winning the World Series, but La Russa is adamant that he did not want to stay on just to move up one spot on the all-time win list. (He is only 35 games behind number two on the list). He has been a part of the Cardinals for so long that fans are sure to miss him. I wouldn’t be surprised if I saw some Cardinals MLB tire covers decorated in his honor.
LSU and Alabama
This weekend’s match-up between LSU and Alabama is highly anticipated. Currently, LSU stands at number one in the BCS ranking. Their record stands at 8-0, 5-0 despite having to deal with absences of key players. Alabama has the same record and stands at number two.
If Alabama wins this weekend, they are sure to advance to the SEC championship game – their third trip in four years. Should LSU win, they will need to beat Arkansas to make it to the championship game. LSU Tigers tire covers are sure to litter the parking lot in Baton Rouge this weekend as eager fans hope for the best in what’s sure to be a thrilling game.
